Designs

Copyright

Copyright is a form of legal protection for work such as literary text, artistic works, computer programs and technical drawings.

Copyright protection arises automatically because of the creating of the work, and there is no official system for registering it.

Technical Drawings

Where a technical drawing has copyright, recreating a 2D or 3D representation of that drawing without permission infringes on its copyright.

But creating a functional 3D object that recreates a commercially available product does not infringe copyright.

There is a complex legal relationship between the protection of registered designs, and the copyright for technical drawings of those designs. Our team can advise on any issues or confusion arising from this relationship.
